CPU Marks Milestone Anniversary with Renewed Commitment

Utility thanks residents for 125 great years as it looks to the future

Times may change, but values remain constant. And for 125 years, Clarksdale Public Utilities has been committed to this community and the people it serves. That is why the company is celebrating its successes as it embarks on the next phase of its journey.

Since 1899, the utility has been there for customers through thick and thin — building and expanding infrastructure, weathering storms, adapting to new technologies and continually striving to meet ever-changing needs. With a nod to the past and an eye on the future, employees are excited about what is to come, and renew their dedication to the city in which they live and work.

“Our anniversary is much more than observing a milestone, it is a time to reflect upon the progress and positive impact we have made,” said Curtis D. Boschert, CPU general manager. “As we step into the next 125 years, we will keep investing in Clarksdale and building upon the many achievements we already have realized.”

At the end of the 19th century, the idea of a public utility bringing electricity and water services to homes was a new concept. Electric streetlights were still a relatively new marvel, and indoor plumbing was a luxury for many. Despite facing early challenges, the founders were determined to provide high-quality solutions for residents.

Turning the page to today, CPU works hand-in-hand with leaders and officials to tailor its operations to meet long-term goals and direct its resources to boost economic development. In fact, its New Generations initiative builds upon its role as a loyal provider of essential services. And employees are all about it.

“We are committed to excellence on all fronts — now and for generations to come,” said Mike Vonallmen, CPU plant managrer. “Our work is incredibly rewarding and our team takes pride in knowing that we are dedicated to creating a stronger, sustainable, more resilient community for all of us.”

Local ownership allows CPU to put Clarksdale first and embrace business and technological innovations that make sense for the immediate area, rather than relying on decisions made in cities hundreds or thousands of miles away.

In addition, it provides more flexibility to respond to evolving demands, increasing customer satisfaction and keeping CPU’s reliability performance among the highest in the state.

Working for a public utility is more than just a job; it is about being part of something that directly impacts people’s lives,” said Katorra Hawkins, CPU human resources director. “What drives me is knowing the work we do makes life possible for families and business owners, hospitals and schools. We take the responsibility seriously, and I could not be prouder of our progress.”

Looking ahead, CPU’s promise is simple — employees will keep working hard to fulfill the utility’s mission of providing sustainable electric, water and wastewater services in a reliable and courteous manner. And as they do so, they want to express appreciation for customers.

“We thank our customers for shaping what we do,” said Boschert. “Their trust, loyalty and feedback on what is most important to you have been essential in helping us grow and improve over the years. Their goals are our goals, and we look forward to serving Clarksdale in the years to come.”
