Clarksdale Public Utilities is reminding customers to remain vigilant against scams.
Nationwide losses to fraudulent activity have soared in recent years, with the Federal Trade Commission reporting that consumers lost more than $10 billion to fraud in 2023 — a 14% increase from the previous year. The agency further reported that imposter scams were the most commonly reported type, based upon reports from 2.6 million consumers.
“In the face of rising cyber threats, utility customers remain a prime target,” said Curtis D. Boschert, CPU general manager. “We're determined to protect our valued customers from these increasingly sophisticated criminals who mimic trusted entities. It's crucial to stay vigilant and avoid falling victim to their schemes."
A variety of attempts to separate you from your hard-earned money have been around for some time. Criminals now are combining their tried-and-true methods with deception in other ways. To minimize risk, everyone is encouraged to stay in the know.
How can you tell if someone may be scamming you? They often contact you unexpectedly and create a sense of urgency. Here is a brief overview:
Aggressive Phone Calls
Scammers frequently pose as utility company representatives and demanding immediate payment for past-due bills. These scammers often direct victims to use unconventional payment methods like MoneyPak or Green Dot. To protect yourself, always verify payment requests directly with your utility provider.
Unsolicited Visits
Some imposters go door-to-door posing as utility employees to collect payments, insist on an immediate deposit for new utility equipment or offer free energy audit services. Never let anyone in unless you've verified their identity. If you're unsure, contact your utility company directly.
Phishing Emails and Text Messages
Scammers are increasingly using sophisticated tactics like phishing emails and smishing texts to steal your data or money. Never click on links or download attachments from unknown senders. If you have doubts, contact CPU directly to verify.
Fraudulent Codes and Websites
Scammers use deceptive tactics to lure you to fake websites. Be cautious of unexpected links or QR codes. Verify the website's legitimacy before proceeding.
"Knowledge is your best defense against scammers," said Boschert. "Stay informed about the latest scams and be cautious of suspicious messages. If you're unsure, contact CPU directly."
CPU offers several safe and secure options to pay your utility bill — by mail, via the secure online customer portal, through automatic bank draft and in person via kiosk or the CPU office drop box.
